About Academic Gowns

Academic gowns are traditional attire worn at university graduation ceremonies and degree conferment ceremonies.

History of Academic Gowns

The origin of academic gowns dates back to medieval European universities. At that time, scholars wore long robes to keep warm in cold classrooms. Over time, these robes evolved into formal attire symbolizing academic status. In Japan, the culture of academic gowns was introduced after the Meiji Restoration along with Western university systems.

Academic Gowns at the University of Tokyo

The University of Tokyo has adopted Western-style gowns. Bachelor's gowns are solid black with straight sleeves, master's gowns are navy blue with piping and slit sleeves, and doctoral gowns have bell-shaped sleeves with thick piping. The hood lining reflects the field of study: deep red for law, light blue for science, purple for humanities, etc. These gowns continue to symbolize academic tradition and formality at graduation ceremonies and academic events to this day.
